St. Francis Xavier
A Spanish Basque Jesuit priest, he preached to the first Japanese Christians. He died at the age of forty-six off the China coast in 1552. Ora pro nobis.
I grew up looking at this window and all the others at St. Joseph's Church in Macon, Georgia. The church itself was completed in 1903. The windows are by Franz Mayer of Munich.
Legend has it that Vladmir Lenin was the model for the man in the right panel, having befriended the window's artist while in exile in Munich at the turn of the last century. Local legend also has it that the Air Force Base in the neighboring (middle Georgia) town of Warner Robins was one of the top potential targets in case of nuclear war with the Soviet Union. There is still a fallout shelter in the basement of the Church.
